We are now into 2020 and Christmas seems a distant memory it’s a great time to have a look at what the marketing trends for 2020 might be. Hopefully, this blog post will give you some ideas you can put in your campaigns and help drive your business forward.

Technology is changing the way marketers market their brands and with more and more automation becoming accessible this seems to be a big change in 2020. However, because automation can be scary the more traditional approaches will also becoming on-trend in 2020.

Let’s have a look at the biggest marketing trends in 2020.

Lady being recorded

You can’t escape video is on the rise and has been for a while. It’s probably been on many marketing trends lists for a few years. The days of static images on your social feed are long gone. Plus, throw in the fact that Google is looking for different types of media on your site for rankings, it makes sense that if you are not already using video to promote your company, you should be.

Videos can be used in a variety of ways like vlogging, corporate videos, interviews, case studies the list goes on and on and on.  Some facts on videos are:

  • 54% of consumers want to see more video from (HubSpot 2018)
  • 88% of marketers who use video are happy with their ROI. (Animoto, 2018)
  • Viewers are 95% more likely to remember a call to action on a video (Forbes 2017)
  • 93% of businesses say they have gotten results from using videos on social media

We could go on and on giving you facts on why you should be using video. A great way to utilise videos are video packs. These are salesmen you can post. If you have a killer corporate video then send it out to your customers in a branded wallet. These wallets play the video as soon as they are opened and are a sure-fire way to generate those all-important leads.

Live video will also be huge in 2020. Using live video on social media as most are now offering a live function (such as Facebook Live or YouTube Live Stream) is an amazing way to communicate with your audience in real-time.

Offline and Online marketing hybrid

Merging offline and online marketing methods has always been the key to multi-channel marketing (obviously). But it’s now easier than ever with programmatic direct mail. In its simplest form, it automates the interaction between online customer behaviour and follow up direct mails. One of the biggest functions of programmatic direct mail is the recovery of abandoned carts. Put some tracking code inside your website, set up some templates and set your triggers and boom sit back and relax and let the code take care of everything else.

If a customer does abandon an online shopping cart the code will send them a personalised direct mail within 48 hours. The direct mail can have discounts or any other products similar to what’s in the customers’ basket, all personalised to that customer. This system can also be used to send promotional offers to customers who are just browsing, send automated birthday offers amongst other functions. Of course, for the system to work you need customer data such as an address, name, birthday etc. But once you have that can set the triggers and relax.  Click here for more information on our programmatic mail service PSE Mail.

Personalisation will also be big in 2020. That doesn’t just mean putting a “to” field in your emails, although you should definitely be doing that. People don’t want to be targeted with generic adverts.  A great way to utilise this is when a customer logs into your website have a banner welcoming them back by name.

Using big data to analyse your customer base and deliver tailored ads can have a huge impact on ROI. Gathering and using the data is a must in this age of data. But use the data wisely if you are writing adverts saying we saw you hovered over this product for 5.64 seconds on the 12th December have an offer for it is going to make any consumer not trust you. Using personalisation to advertise a particular product in a certain location is a great example. Segment your database and personalise adverts to build trust and show you know your customer.

Referral Marketing

Referral marketing is going to be a huge player in 2020. The fact that you can turn your customers into salespeople is amazing. This method of marketing is one of the most cost-effective ways of growing your customer base. People are 4 times more likely to purchase a product or service from a website that has been recommended by a friend. And of those that have been referred, they are usually a more profitable customer spending as much as 16% more for the first few years compared to non-referred customers.

Referral marketing has so many different avenues it can go down. You have got social media, word of mouth, emails, etc all can be quite hard to track. But our system generates a code based on the existing customers’ name so that even word of mouth can be tracked ensuring you have the data to prove you are getting your ROI. Plus on top of that, it’s easier than ever to set up. The PSE Referral System only takes 2 javascript tags in your website and your off and ready to go.

Collaborative Campaigns

Collaborative campaigns or some times called insert swaps are a win win situation for everyone concerned and PSE have seen an increase of these in 2019 and are expecting the trend to continue to rise. What are collaborative campaigns? These are when 2 companies who are sending parcels out to customers daily, “swap” inserts and advertise the other company. Now obviously you wouldn’t want to be advertising direct competition! But if the parcels are going to the same demographic as yours then it really is a win-win situation for both parties.

By implementing insert swaps, you can reach similar demographics and can usually be a cost-neutral exercise if both parties have a similar number of parcel dispatches. Online ordering and subscription boxes have exploded in the past few years and more parcels are being sent out today than ever before. So we expect that collaborative campaigns are only going to continue to rise in popularity. Need help finding companies to collaborate with? PSE can help put you in contact with the right 3rd parties.
